Liam Gallagher working on new band without brother

NEW YORK (Billboard) – Former Oasis guitarist and vocalist Liam Gallagher says that he and the other members of the band -- aside from his brother Noel -- are writing songs and will perform as a new group.

"We're sort of doing things at the moment," he said during an Italian radio interview to promote his Pretty Green clothing line. "Not Oasis, Oasis is done. Everyone except for Noel."

Liam Gallagher founded the band in 1991 with Paul Arthurs, Paul McGuigan and Tony McCaroll. Noel joined shortly thereafter and took over as Oasis' lead songwriter. The Gallagher brothers were the longest-standing members of the band; the rest of the current lineup includes guitarist/keyboardist Colin Archer, bassist Andy Bell and drummer Chris Sharrock.

Liam quit the band in late August, shortly after the last-minute cancellation of the group's scheduled performance at the Rock En Seine festival in Paris.

"It's with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight," Gallagher wrote on the band's website. "People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer."

During a later interview with the London Times, Liam said, "It's a shame, but that's life. We had a good run at it. The thing about Oasis is, no one ... we ended Oasis. No one ended it for us. Which was pretty, kind of ... cool. I'm thinking of what the next step is musically, which is all my mind's on."

He added: "I'll be doing music to the day I die. People will be able to buy his (Noel's) records. People will be able to buy our records. So everyone's happy."

Oasis' most recent album, "Dig Out Your Soul," peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 last October.

Liam Gallagher confirms Oasis are done after a month of silence

For the millions of Oasis fans who held out hope that the band would somehow carry on without their lead guitarist and songwriter Noel Gallagher there hopes were dashed today. Younger brother Liam Gallagher spoke to The London Times today about his clothing label called Pretty Green and the singer broke the news that the band is done. The singer, who hadn't talked about the breakup initiated by his brother since the split in late August, told the paper:

Liam: “We’ve always had a lot of fun [he means on tour with the band]. I’ve always had a lot of fun [his eyes flash devilishly]. “That’s why it was never hard work for me. It was a joy and it was always a bit of a bummer when the tour ended. You know [he pauses wistfully], it was great. Obviously you’ve got to get back and see the missus and the kids and all that. Nothing lasts for ever. But it was never, ‘Uh, f***, I need to get off the tour because my head’s up my arse’.” [Could he be referring, obliquely, to Noel? Most probably.] Times2: “Oasis is your band. Is it fair to say that this [gestures at rack of Pretty Green autumn/winter 2009 collection] is a solo projection?” (I meant “solo project” but was nervous. He is a bit unsettling.) Liam. “Well, Oasis is no longer. I think we all know that. So that’s done.”

Times2: “You genuinely feel that?”

Liam: “Oh, I know. Without a doubt. And it’s a shame but that’s life. We had a good run at it. The thing about Oasis is, no one ... we ended Oasis. No one ended it for us. Which was pretty, kind of ... cool (the word “cool” is enunciated with venom). I’m thinking of what the next step is musically, which is all my mind’s on.”

Noel is said to be pursuing a solo album that will be eagerly awaited by fans and critics alike to see what he has to offer the music world. Liam, meanwhile, has been offered to collaborate with rapper Jay-Z but that was not brought up in the recent interview and we do not know where he will turn his musical interests.

Noel Gallagher quits Oasis, marking the end of the band

On 28 August 2009, after a fight between the Gallaghers in the backstage, their manager announces the cancellation of their concert at the Rock-en-Seine festival near Paris just minutes before it was about to begin, the cancellation of the European tour and that the group "does not exist anymore", referring a coming statement from Noel Gallagher.

Two hours later, a little before midnight, on the band website, a statement of Noel Gallagher reads:

"It's with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight. People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer." "Apologies to all the people who bought tickets for the shows in Paris, Konstanz and Milan."

UPDATE: Noel's "Tales from the Middle of Nowhere" (Noel's Tour Diary)

Dearly beloved, it is with a heavy heart and a sad face that I say this to you this morning.

As of last Friday the 28th August, I have been forced to leave the Manchester rock'n'roll pop group Oasis.

The details are not important and of too great a number to list. But I feel you have the right to know that the level of verbal and violent intimidation towards me, my family, friends and comrades has become intolerable. And the lack of support and understanding from my management and band mates has left me with no other option than to get me cape and seek pastures new.

I would like firstly to offer my apologies to them kids in Paris who'd paid money and waited all day to see us only to be let down AGAIN by the band. Apologies are probably not enough, I know, but I'm afraid it's all I've got.

While I'm on the subject, I'd like to say to the good people of V Festival that experienced the same thing. Again, I can only apologise - although I don't know why, it was nothing to do with me. I was match fit and ready to be brilliant. Alas, other people in the group weren't up to it.

In closing I would like to thank all the Oasis fans, all over the world. The last 18 years have been truly, truly amazing (and I hate that word, but today is the one time I'll deem it appropriate). A dream come true. I take with me glorious memories.

Now, if you'll excuse me I have a family and a football team to indulge.

I'll see you somewhere down the road. It's been a fuckin' pleasure.

Thanks very much.

Goodbye.

NG.

One of Michael Jackson's Greatest Songs

"Dirty Diana" is a hit song by singer Michael Jackson, released in April 1988. The song presented a harder rock sound similar to that of "Beat It" from the album Thriller. It was the fifth and final number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 from his 1987 album Bad.
